Bears vs Hares
Tops and Bottoms adapted and illustrated by Janet Stevens
Who do you think is wittier a Bear or a Hare? Guess you’ll have to read this book to find out. One of these two walks away with a bountiful supply of food from a very well planned garden. This book is very funny and clever you are sure to giggle even on the inside. The Bookworm Burrow rates this book with 6 worms just for giggles!
Summer Time Begins to Come to an End…………
Garman’s Summer written and illustrated by Staian Holo
This is a very touching story that gives us a glimpse into a child’s view and how he pieces together of the world around him. It also touches on a shared human trait and openly talks about the feeling of being scared to start school. This book can help you and you child begin talking and relfecting on feelings together. The illustrations have a fun twist to them and they carry the overall mood of the story well. This book has even won awards. The Bookworm Burrow rates this book with an 8 for it’s insights into the world around us, very well done it just grabs your heart! Recommended for children age 5 and up at least.
Elephant Pooh Eww!
The Boy Who Went Ape written and illustrated by Benjamin and Richard Watson
This story is a must read for any child that has been labeled as the trouble maker at school. A boy does the switch-a-roo with a chimp at the zoo. Since he is known for monkeying around it takes everyone a while to realize who is who. The best part about this book is it was printed on elephant pooh! It is eco friendly and saves an elephant too! Film vs Book
- I do not believe the book Where the Wild Things Are should be compared to the Movie. Even though they have the same title they each bring something different to the table. The strength of the book is that it captured the essence of being a child on the inside. It took something we all have experienced (going to your room) and made it into a fun adventure over uncharted seas and new lands. This story is simple but has profound symbolism. Thanks you Sendak for capturing the heart of kids everywhere.
The movie took a piece of symbolism from the book and ran Wild with the complexities of feelings and the unconscious mind. For this reason I loved the film but this same reason is why the book lovers may have had a hard time with the movie. The film and script really took the time to explore something that we as a society don’t credit or merit as meaningful; the deep dark secret called, feelings.
The movie wove tons of symbolic themes thorough out along with images and metaphoric words. Even the lighting for the movie had a dark representation. The boy sets sail on the unchartered seas of the mind only to return after the same themes that were played out with his family where played out in the imagination of his mind……a sometimes scary place with mean but loving monsters. I don’t think that the symbolism in the movie could get any better than it was.
I have heard many reviews stating that the movie was dark and not fun. True it was dark and not the light hearted movies we are use to seeing from Hollywood. However this is why the movie was so great, it played out an area of the mind we don’t like to talk about it society…there is a darkness associated with feelings….but as the movie pointed out it is okay to explore that darkness…you are safe and you will not get hurt by the scary uneasiness that comes from feelings (monsters)!
The choice of subject matter was great for the movie and I applaud the writers and directors. If only we could make feelings more socially acceptable to acknowledge. If Max has the courage to overcome his fears and explore the harsh realities of the desert and the safe yet dark caves found within his mind then we can too!
I am curious what kids thought of the movie or what they think of the book! Please do share big kids (adults) and children welcome!

Pink and purple elephant

I Love Summertime!
The pink and purple spotted elephant stepped out the front door into the warmth of the sun and let out a sigh of releif. It was the first day of summer vacation and he was on his way to the beach to swim with some friends. Swimming was his favorite past time. Even in the winter months you could find him in the lakes swimming with the fish. He was always seen with his pink and purple spotted trunk out of the water…………….
Now it’s your turn to add to the story. What happens next? Does the elephant have a name, friends or do any crazy tricks in the water??? What is so different about this summer from last summer??? What amazing things can you think of?
